The Significance of Decolonial Discourse for the Building of Civil Society in Mozambique
This master’s degree thesis aims to analyse the decolonial discourse in relation to Mozambique. The proponents of decolonisation ideas call for the re-evaluation of the relationship between the global South and the global North, not only in the political and economic spheres but also and chiefly in the areas of knowledge and being. By applying Foucault’s concept of power/knowledge and the theories of the centre and peripheries, the thesis will first focus on analysing the key principles which lie behind the request for the epistemic „delinking” from the dominant drivers of the global North and for the emancipation of locally established knowledge. Subsequently, it will seek to determine whether and how these principles are reflected in the Mozambican context, in respective theoretical works, and in programmes designed to build civil society in Mozambique. Finally, due to the dialogic character of the discourse, the thesis will attempt to explore ways by which the transcultural communication might contribute to the ongoing conversation.
