Student will get basic overview of the impact of selected musical works inspired by the topics mentioned in cultural and public life of society in history.

Content: 1. General introduction to the course. Presentation of the concept, introduction to the basic erminology. 2. Ancient myths and heroic epics in baroque operas. Fashion trend and “leak” into the idealized world of “perfection”. 3. Ancient heroes in music from Romanticism to the present. 4. Heroic kings Xerxes and Nabucabnesar II .: inspiration for composers throughout the centuries. 5. Jews in the opera. 6. National School I.: revitalization of national legends and myths one of the means of national self-determination. 7. National School II.: old Germanic myths in the works of Richard Wagner as an instrument of political ideology. 8. National school.: III Scandinavia and its heroes. 9. The National Schools IV.: Czech myths and legends in the work of selected composers. 10. Final summary of the course, colloquium.
