Cultural History of Western Friaries

The subject gives an historical overview of the emergence and development of monasticism and religious life in Europe, with an emphasis on the Western Church. European history can´t be understood without knowledge of the Franciscans or Dominicans contribution to 13th century or 16th century for the Jesuits. We will follow the the emergence hermitage communities in Egypt, the development of monasticism, the process of creating a chivalrous, militarily organized orders. Finally, we mention the current status of orders and current transformation of consecrated life.

Showing the very foundations of the phenomenon of religious life in the Judeo-Christian tradition, its origins, various historical forms and transformations and its influence on the development of European society from antiquity to the present day.
