Theory of Culture 5: Anthropology of Settlement Systems

The course strives to present basic settlement system in a historical perspective. It aims to explore the intrinsic rationality of a world disclosure through the architecture in the diversity and variations of different forms of settlement. Special consideration is given to the history of settlement in Europe. The development of urban society and culture, countryside and landscape in Europe is thus discussed in a more detailed way. Apart from a depiction of general development, it also focuses on the important European cities: Florence, Rome, Paris and Venice.

The main aim of the course is to organize and supplement the knowledge of the different forms of human settlement. It should lead to understanding of the images of the world constructed in the different, particularly traditional, cultures and to the interdisciplinary, holistic knowledge of transcultural principles of the human settlement in the world.
